The "prayer plants" are named after a special feature: when night falls, they fold their leaves upright as if they were praying for the evening vespers. With the morning light, the leaves open again, sometimes even with a faint rustling. Native to the Brazilian rainforest, there are around 50 different species of prayer plants.

They also do well in homes in temperate regions. The leaves of some species are used in basket weaving. Some other species produce wax, while others have edible flowers and bulbs. The Arawak people of South America used the starch of the plant's rhizome to absorb the poison from wounds. Prayer plants are not only cultivated for their strength, but are also popular for the visual appeal of their leaves, as they feature patterns that look like they were hand drawn.

We are a design duo from Zurich. We explore the intersection between nature and design in our design products, which include limited edition prints, card sets, notebooks and art books. We let ourselves be inspired by nature and its phenomena. In extensive research, we investigate the origin and cultural significance of these phenomena and then implement the results visually. A poetically subtle imagery is characteristic of Bienvenue Studios.

We incorporate the perspective of our origins into our design process. While Oliver Hischier grew up in the middle of the Valais Alps, Xiaoqun Wu comes from Shanghai, one of the largest cities in the world. This allows us to look at natural phenomena and design from different perspectives.
